The Sarnia Jail became the unlikely epicenter of a bizarre sequence of events, beginning with a harrowing kidnapping and culminating in a woman’s unexpected house arrest. Jody Hodgert, a 47-year-old Sarnia resident, found herself entangled in a criminal case far beyond her making, a situation that would ultimately lead to a hidden cargo discovered in the most unexpected of places.
The initial incident unfolded on September 17, 2023, with allegations of a violent kidnapping involving a car, a trunk, and a victim stripped down and held captive. Hodgert and her associates were initially charged, but the charges were quietly dropped after peace bonds were signed, seemingly closing a dark chapter. However, the story was far from over.
Later that same day, a different kind of discovery was made within the walls of the Sarnia Jail. Corrections officers found seven grams of suspected fentanyl concealed within Hodgert’s bra. The revelation sparked a separate investigation, leading to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Hodgert recently pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of simple drug possession, a plea accepted by both the defense and the prosecution. The judge sentenced her to four months of house arrest and a strict curfew, a consequence stemming from a situation she claimed was entirely forced upon her.
Her defense attorney painted a picture of a woman caught in a web of unfortunate circumstances, a victim of association and manipulation. Hodgert, the lawyer explained, had encountered individuals involved in the local drug scene through her neighbors and was subsequently exploited by one of them.
According to the defense, a third party had surreptitiously placed the drugs into Hodgert’s bra during the chaotic events of that day. Despite multiple opportunities to come forward, Hodgert remained silent until the drugs were discovered, a decision that ultimately shaped the outcome of her case.
The judge acknowledged the inherent danger of contraband within a correctional facility, emphasizing the risks posed to both inmates and staff. However, he also noted Hodgert’s clean criminal record and suggested a degree of naiveté in her interactions with law enforcement.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the complex and often unforeseen ways individuals can become entangled in the criminal justice system, and the delicate balance between accountability and circumstance.
