The initial phase of the crackdown has already yielded results, with a 42-year-old man in Newport arrested on suspicion of selling illicit Fire Sticks. Others across the country have received stern cease-and-desist letters, a clear indication that law enforcement is actively pursuing those involved.
This isn’t simply about warnings; it’s about accountability. Recent court cases demonstrate a hardening stance, with individuals facing substantial jail time for their involvement. Jonathan Edge, from Liverpool, is currently serving a three-year sentence for selling and using these modified devices, despite prior warnings.
Amazon itself is taking steps to combat the issue, introducing a new Fire TV Stick 4K Select with a fundamentally different operating system. This change makes it significantly harder for unauthorized apps to gain the necessary permissions to function, effectively raising the bar for modification.
However, cybersecurity experts caution that this move may not eradicate the problem entirely. James Bore, a leading expert, suggests the crackdown could simply drive illegal activity further underground, pushing operators towards non-Amazon devices and more sophisticated methods.
