A mere 24 hours after the public release of iOS 26.1, Apple has already seeded the first beta of iOS 26.2 to developers, hinting at a significant shift in how we share files.
Digging into the code, a new feature is emerging: a PIN code system for AirDrop. This promises to dramatically enhance the security and privacy of file transfers, a growing concern for users in public spaces.
This isn’t the first indication of AirDrop improvements. iOS 26.1 itself contained references to “AirDropPrivacyImprovements,” suggesting Apple is actively focused on bolstering this popular sharing method.
The envisioned PIN system could function much like Bluetooth pairing or AirPlay authentication. The receiving device would display a unique code, requiring the sender to input it before a connection is established – a simple yet powerful safeguard.
Currently, AirDrop offers limited privacy controls: “Contacts Only,” a 10-minute “Everyone” window, or completely disabling receiving. The PIN system would add another layer of protection, giving users greater control over who can send them files.
While the “AirDropPINPairing” feature is present in the beta code, it’s currently disabled. Apple often tests features internally for multiple beta cycles before public release, so patience is key.
The development of this new security mechanism will be closely monitored as further betas are released. It represents a proactive step towards addressing the potential for unwanted or accidental file transfers.
For now, the iOS 26.2 beta is exclusive to registered developers. A public beta program is anticipated to launch later this week, offering a wider audience a chance to explore the upcoming changes.
A full public release of iOS 26.2 is currently projected for sometime in December, bringing these enhanced AirDrop security features closer to everyday users.
