A quiet Wednesday morning on the French island of Ile d’Oleron shattered as a vehicle was deliberately driven into pedestrians and cyclists, leaving a trail of injuries across two towns. Nine people were hurt in the shocking attacks, unfolding on the normally tranquil Atlantic coast island, a favorite destination for tourists.
The situation quickly escalated to critical, with two of the injured fighting for their lives. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez immediately launched an investigation and headed to the scene, recognizing the gravity of the unfolding events.
Dolus-d’Oleron’s mayor, Thibault Brechkoff, described a series of intentional collisions, confirming injuries within his town. A crisis center was swiftly established, and authorities moved to apprehend the suspect, bringing a tense period of uncertainty to a close.
