SEVENTEEN YEARS. ZERO REGRETS. HOW WE ESCAPED THE 9-TO-5.

SEVENTEEN YEARS. ZERO REGRETS. HOW WE ESCAPED THE 9-TO-5.

In 2008, we were just two twenty-four-year-olds, burdened with 65-liter backpacks and a single, audacious dream: to travel the world with complete freedom. We had no idea where that dream would lead, only that we had to try.

We left behind the predictable rhythm of Canadian life – corporate offices and graveyard shifts – trading it all for one-way tickets to Southeast Asia. It was a leap of faith, a rejection of the conventional, and the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

That first taste of travel was intoxicating. We backpacked through Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, sleeping in bamboo huts and hitching rides on bus roofs. We documented our adventures on a simple blog and Facebook, sharing our experiences with family and friends back home.

But the freedom came at a cost. As our money dwindled, a terrifying realization set in: we couldn’t afford to keep the dream alive indefinitely. The thought of returning to our old lives filled us with dread.

The crisis culminated in a moment of despair on a Philippine beach. We knew we needed a solution, and fast. We had to find a way to earn a living on the road, doing something we genuinely loved.

In 2012, huddled in a dimly lit internet cafe in Delhi, we stumbled upon a revelation. A blogger was earning $1,500 a month simply by sharing his travel stories online. A spark ignited. Could we do the same?

We taught ourselves WordPress and basic coding, building our website, “Goats On The Road,” from a beach hut on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand. We poured our hearts into sharing our stories, photos, and videos, unknowingly laying the foundation for our personal brand.

To sustain our journey, we spent a year teaching English in China. It was a valuable experience, but ultimately a stepping stone. We knew we were meant for something more – a life of independence and creative freedom.

As Goats On The Road grew, we immersed ourselves in the world of online marketing. We devoured knowledge about SEO, email marketing, and social media, constantly refining our skills and sharing our insights with others.

Momentum began to build. Our website attracted a loyal following, reaching 500,000 visitors each month. Tourism boards and companies invited us to explore new destinations, offering incredible opportunities to share our experiences with the world.

Our vision was becoming a reality. The little blog born from a beach hut had transformed into a full-time income, allowing us to live a life of purpose and adventure.

In 2018, we felt a new calling: to empower others to create their own freedom-filled lives. We had mastered the art of building an online brand, and we were eager to share our knowledge.

We launched our first online course, focused on SEO and personal branding. Over 1,000 people joined, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. It was incredibly rewarding to witness our students achieving their own dreams.

But the online landscape was about to undergo a seismic shift. The COVID-19 pandemic brought global travel to a standstill, and Google’s algorithm updates threatened our website’s visibility. New platforms like TikTok and the rise of AI further disrupted the industry.

We faced a critical juncture. We could panic, or we could adapt. We chose the latter, drawing upon our years of experience and embracing the power of diversification.

We launched two new brands centered around Nick’s passions: fly fishing and guitars. While travel was on hold, these ventures provided a lifeline, demonstrating the resilience of a diversified online presence.

This period reinforced a crucial lesson: platforms can crumble, algorithms can change, but your personal brand, your skills, and your knowledge are untouchable. They are the foundation of lasting success.

In 2023, we recognized the growing demand for personalized guidance and support. We launched the Creator Kickstarter Coaching Program, a blended model combining coaching, courses, and a vibrant community.

We were initially plagued by self-doubt, questioning our ability to deliver meaningful value. But the positive response from our first cohort of 50 students quickly dispelled those fears.

We discovered the profound satisfaction of helping others build impactful brands, empowering them to live lives aligned with their passions. It wasn’t about us anymore; it was about creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Today, we continue to refine and expand our coaching program, driven by a deep commitment to helping aspiring creators unlock their full potential. We believe that personal brands are more important than ever in a rapidly evolving digital world.
