For three years, Mezhgan Aini vanished without a trace, a silent disappearance masked by everyday life. Known to friends as Sarah, this Mississauga mother of three simply ceased to be present in the lives of those who knew her, yet no alarm was raised.
The unsettling truth emerged not from within Canada, but from a desperate plea reaching across continents. It was her family in Afghanistan, unable to reach her for years, who finally reported her missing in 2025, triggering a Peel Regional Police investigation that would soon point to a horrifying conclusion: homicide.
Detectives believe Sarah was last seen sometime between June and September of 2022. Her husband, Mohammad Yama Aini, remained in their Mississauga apartment with their three children, aged eight to seventeen, while the search for answers began – years after her presumed death.
The silence surrounding Sarah’s disappearance is particularly jarring to her sister, Benafsha Ahmadi, who spoke from Afghanistan. She recounts a pattern of evasive explanations from Mohammad, claiming Sarah was ill, hospitalized, or simply unwilling to communicate. Each assurance, she says, felt like another layer of deception.
“Her communication with us stopped,” Ahmadi stated, her voice filled with anguish. “How is it possible that a woman can be missing for three years and no one notices?” The question hangs heavy, a stark indictment of a system that failed to protect her.
This case is further complicated by a disturbing incident from the couple’s past. In 2017, while Mohammad was a diplomat stationed in New York City, Sarah was taken to a hospital with a bloodied eye and facial wounds, injuries police suspected were inflicted by her husband.
The circumstances surrounding that incident are chilling. Sarah, then wearing a burka, reportedly arrived at the hospital with visible injuries. However, due to Mohammad’s diplomatic immunity, no charges were filed. He claimed Sarah had simply tripped, a story she seemingly corroborated at the time.
Following the New York incident, Mohammad was recalled to Afghanistan, where officials reportedly intended to address the allegations internally. Instead, the family fled, seeking refuge in Canada and claiming refugee status. Sarah found work as a talented seamstress in Mississauga, while Mohammad took a job as a store clerk.
Peel police are now meticulously piecing together the events of 2022, focusing on the period between June and September when Sarah was last seen. They are appealing to anyone who may have observed something unusual near the family’s apartment, no matter how insignificant it may have seemed at the time.
Investigators are hopeful that a seemingly minor detail – a fleeting observation, a security camera recording, a dashcam video – could unlock the mystery surrounding Sarah’s death. While a motive remains undisclosed, police are pursuing a specific theory and remain open to all possibilities.
The search for justice for Mezhgan Aini is a race against time. While bringing her home is no longer possible, finding her killer could prevent future tragedies and offer a measure of peace to a grieving family desperately seeking answers.
