A northern Minnesota community is reeling from the sudden loss of Sergeant Cody Siebert, a dedicated police officer and father of two young sons. He passed away less than a day after receiving a diagnosis of a devastating brain infection, leaving behind a family and colleagues utterly heartbroken.
Siebert served as a K9 officer, first in Babbitt with his partner, Taconite, and later with the East Range Police Department. He wasn’t simply a law enforcement officer; he was a cornerstone of the community, known for his unwavering dedication and approachable spirit.
Those who knew him remember a man defined by his infectious positivity. Colleagues often said that anyone unable to connect with Cody had only themselves to blame, a testament to his genuine and welcoming nature.
The speed of his decline was shocking. Just days before his passing, Siebert complained of a headache, leading to hospitalization and the discovery of an infection that rapidly spread to his brain. The illness proved tragically swift and unstoppable.
His family described him as a man who cherished connection, offering a genuine conversation to everyone he met. He found joy in people and dedicated himself to serving and helping others, a trait deeply valued by those who knew him.
The tragedy is compounded by a recent loss within the family. Just months prior, Siebert’s sister-in-law, Alyssa Siebert, succumbed to a brain aneurysm, leaving the family grappling with unimaginable grief.
Despite their sorrow, the family finds solace in knowing Cody, like his sister-in-law, gave the gift of life through organ donation. Both were described as individuals who consistently put others before themselves, achieving more in their young lives than many do in decades.
Mesabi East Schools mourned Siebert not only as their K9 officer but as a mentor, role model, and a constant source of positivity for students and staff. His impact extended far beyond law enforcement, shaping the lives of those he served.
He is survived by his life partner, Karen Blais, and their two young sons, ages one and two. The community has rallied around the family, demonstrating the profound impact Cody had on all who knew him.
