A second arrest has been made in connection with the chaotic scene that unfolded last week in Washington Square Park. What began as a seemingly playful snowball fight quickly escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement, leaving multiple officers injured.
Eighteen-year-old Eric Wilson Jr. turned himself in Wednesday morning and now faces misdemeanor charges of obstructing government administration and harassment. The charges stem from the incident where police were reportedly targeted with a barrage of snowballs during an event organized through social media.
The situation took a dangerous turn when officers arriving to manage the crowd found themselves under attack, not just with snow, but with projectiles allegedly containing rocks and ice. Two officers were subsequently treated at a hospital for head and facial injuries.
This second arrest follows the initial apprehension of Gusmane Coulibaly, 27, who was first charged with felony assault on a police officer. However, prosecutors later reduced those charges to misdemeanor obstruction and harassment, citing a lack of direct evidence linking Coulibaly to the officers’ injuries.
Authorities had released images of several individuals believed to be involved, prompting Coulibaly to come forward. His arrest came less than three weeks after he was previously taken into custody for an attempted robbery within the city’s transit system.
Union officials have been vocal about the severity of the incident, emphasizing that this was far more than a harmless winter game. They maintain that the snowballs contained hard objects, causing genuine harm to the responding officers.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the actions of the participants as “disgraceful” and “criminal,” vowing a thorough investigation. Detectives are actively working to identify and hold accountable all those involved in the assault.
The incident has sparked a debate among city leaders. While the Mayor’s office expressed the belief that the situation did not warrant criminal charges, Governor Kathy Hochul firmly stated that throwing anything at a police officer is unacceptable and merits prosecution.
Governor Hochul underscored the inherent risks faced by law enforcement daily, asserting that officers deserve protection and respect. The contrasting viewpoints highlight the complexities of balancing public safety with individual liberties in the wake of such events.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the details of the snowball fight and determine the full extent of the criminal activity that occurred in Washington Square Park.
