AUSCHWITZ HORROR: School's Halloween Display Sparks Outrage!

A Halloween float intended to be a meditation on mortality sparked outrage after featuring a chillingly accurate replica of the gates of Auschwitz. The display, presented by St. Joseph Catholic School in Pennsylvania, bore the infamous phrase “Arbeit Macht Frei” – “Work Sets You Free” – a phrase forever linked to the horrors of the Holocaust.

Images of the float quickly circulated online, drawing immediate and harsh criticism from community members. The stark imagery, a direct representation of unimaginable suffering, felt deeply inappropriate for a festive occasion, prompting questions about judgment and sensitivity.

The float’s designer, Galen S. Shelley, claimed he was unaware of the full significance of the imagery when he incorporated it. He explained his intention was to symbolize the inevitability of death, a universal truth for all. However, his explanation did little to quell the growing anger and disappointment.

Shelley admitted the gates weren’t part of the original plan, but were substituted when the intended archway failed to arrive on time. This last-minute change, he stated, led to an unforeseen and deeply regrettable outcome, and he sincerely apologized for the pain caused.

The Diocese of Harrisburg and a local cleaning company, whose vehicle pulled the float, swiftly issued apologies. Bishop Timothy C. Senior expressed shock and dismay upon seeing the completed display, emphasizing that the original approved design did not include the offensive imagery.

Bishop Senior unequivocally condemned the inclusion of the gates, acknowledging the profound offense caused by representing the suffering and murder of millions during the Holocaust. He stressed the diocese’s firm stance against antisemitism, hatred, and prejudice.

Galen Shelly of Pennsylvania admitted to building the Halloween float that looked like the gate of Auschwitz. A Littlestown man is apologizing after he says he built a replica of the Auschwitz concentration camp gate ? bearing the infamous phrase ?Arbeit Macht Frei? (work sets you free) ? on a Halloween parade float created for Saint Joseph Catholic School in Hanover.

The apology extended a sincere expression of regret to the Jewish community and all those deeply hurt by the display. It reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to respect, friendship, and shared faith with the Jewish community, calling for healing and unity.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the power of symbols and the importance of understanding their historical weight. It underscores the need for sensitivity and thoughtful consideration when engaging with potentially sensitive imagery, even with the best of intentions.

The Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior was appointed Bishop of Harrisburg by His Holiness, Pope Francis, on April 25, 2023. He was installed as the Bishop of Harrisburg on June 21, 2023, by Archbishop Nelson Perez, metropolitan archbishop of Philadelphia.
