Without hesitation, Pickett raced toward the inferno. He didn’t think about risk, or danger, only about the possibility of someone trapped inside. Alongside his father, Larry Pickett Sr., he moved towards the burning vehicle, determined to help.
They found the driver, David Denton, disoriented and struggling. Working quickly, they pulled Denton free from the wreckage, mere moments before the car was completely consumed by flames. The rescue, captured on video, showed a raw display of courage and selfless action.
The act resonated far beyond the football field. Pickett’s bravery embodied the core values instilled at the United States Military Academy – a commitment to service and a willingness to run towards danger for others.
