A chilling Halloween morning unfolded in Wichita, Kansas, as a former television news anchor now faces the most serious of accusations: first-degree murder. Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 47, once a familiar face on morning news broadcasts, is accused of fatally stabbing her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers.
Police responded to a disturbing scene at the home shared by Mock and Avers around 7:50 a.m. on October 31st. The initial call came not from within the house, but from a neighbor who witnessed a horrifying sight – Mock, covered in blood, desperately seeking help.
Alyssa Castro, a resident of the neighborhood, recounted the unsettling encounter. A bloodied Mock approached Castro’s vehicle, pleading for someone to call 911. She then allegedly took a phone and retreated back inside the house, where she contacted authorities herself.
According to dispatchers, Mock claimed she stabbed her mother in an act of self-defense. The details emerging from the scene painted a far more brutal picture. First responders discovered Anita Avers inside the home, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Mock herself sustained injuries, with cuts visible on her hands when officers arrived. She received medical treatment at a local hospital before being taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. The motive behind this alleged act of violence remains shrouded in mystery.
Prior to this tragic event, Mock enjoyed a career in broadcast journalism, serving as a morning news anchor for FOX 2 News in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015. She also held a position at KOKH FOX 25 in Oklahoma City earlier in her career.
More recently, Mock had transitioned to a role in sales within the data management software industry. However, it is the events of that Halloween morning that have now irrevocably altered the course of her life. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 14th, promising a deeper dive into the circumstances surrounding this devastating case.
