Whispers of Apple’s future iPad plans have solidified into something more concrete. A recently discovered internal document reveals a detailed roadmap for the 2026 iPad lineup, hinting at significant upgrades for both the entry-level model and the popular iPad Air.
The foundation of this revelation lies within Apple’s own code, a pre-release build of iOS 26. This internal document points to a revitalized entry-level iPad, codenamed J581 and J588, powered by the cutting-edge A19 chip – the very same processor destined for the next generation of iPhones.
Currently, the 11th-generation iPad relies on the A16 chip, a capable processor for everyday use. However, it lacks the horsepower needed to fully embrace Apple Intelligence. The A19 promises a staggering 50 percent performance increase over the A16, coupled with a boost in RAM from 6GB to 8GB, unlocking smoother multitasking and a seamless experience with AI-driven features.
Beyond the processor, the new entry-level iPad will also integrate Apple’s N1 wireless chip, first introduced with the iPhone 17. This addition suggests improvements in connectivity and responsiveness. While the core design, display, and camera systems are expected to remain consistent, the internal upgrades represent a substantial leap forward.
The iPad Air is also slated for a refresh, with internal code (J707, J708, J737, and J738) confirming the arrival of the M4 chip. While not a revolutionary jump from the M3, this upgrade will deliver a noticeable performance boost for users of older iPad Air models.
Like its entry-level counterpart, the M4 iPad Air will benefit from the inclusion of the N1 wireless chip, promising enhanced wireless performance. Expect the familiar design, display, and camera specifications to carry over, focusing the upgrade on internal power.
Currently, the internal code doesn’t mention updates to the iPad Pro or iPad mini. These models traditionally follow a less predictable release cycle, and Apple may choose to postpone their updates beyond 2026. However, given the early stage of the iOS 26 build, plans are always subject to change.
According to sources familiar with the development, both the A19-powered iPad and the M4 iPad Air are targeted for release sometime next year, promising a compelling evolution of Apple’s popular tablet lineup.
