A reckoning is brewing on Capitol Hill. Representative Nancy Mace is preparing to force a vote demanding transparency in how Congress handles sexual harassment allegations, a move ignited by a deeply disturbing case and a growing sense of frustration with internal processes.
The catalyst for this push is the tragic death of Regina Santos-Aviles, a former staffer who reportedly died by suicide in September 2025. Mace described the circumstances as horrific, stating Santos-Aviles took her own life in a devastating manner, and questioned the willingness to simply allow standard procedures to unfold in light of such a loss.
The allegations center around Representative Tony Gonzales, accused of sending sexually explicit text messages to Santos-Aviles. Gonzales vehemently denies the affair, claiming he is the target of blackmail orchestrated by the attorney representing Santos-Aviles’ husband. He insists the full story remains untold.
Mace’s resolution aims to dismantle the veil of secrecy surrounding congressional misconduct. It would compel the House Ethics Committee to publicly release all records pertaining to sexual harassment cases involving lawmakers or their staff within 60 days of its passage.
To ensure a swift consideration, Mace intends to invoke a procedural maneuver known as “privileging” the resolution. This forces House leadership to bring the measure to a vote within two legislative days, though opponents could attempt to table it or send it to committee, effectively killing it.
Despite her determination, Mace expressed little optimism about the resolution’s chances of success. She believes a culture of concealment prevails, particularly when a woman dares to challenge the status quo. She anticipates resistance from those who prefer to keep such matters hidden.
The call for accountability extends beyond Mace. Several conservative lawmakers, including Representative Anna Paulina Luna and Representative Tim Burchett, have publicly urged Gonzales to resign, characterizing the allegations as deeply troubling and unacceptable.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations, describing them as “very serious” and “alarming and detestable.” However, navigating this situation is complicated by his narrow majority, where even a single dissenting vote could jeopardize party-line legislation.
An investigation conducted by the Office of Congressional Conduct is nearing completion and is expected to forward its findings to the House Ethics panel following Tuesday’s Texas primary elections. Current House rules prevent the release of such reports within 60 days of an election, adding another layer of complexity.
Gonzales is currently facing a fierce primary challenge from Brandon Herrera, a social media influencer backed by the conservative House Freedom Caucus. Herrera narrowly lost to Gonzales in the previous election, intensifying the political stakes.
This isn’t the first time Mace has championed transparency regarding sensitive information. She was previously among a group of Republicans who advocated for the release of files related to the late Jeffrey Epstein, demonstrating a consistent commitment to uncovering hidden truths.
