The afternoon of February 6th began like any other for 54 elementary school children riding home on a Pennsylvania school bus. Unbeknownst to them, a terrifying ordeal was unfolding, as their driver allegedly navigated the roads while profoundly impaired.
Reports flooded in to Douglass Township Police of a school bus swerving dangerously, narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles. The erratic driving sparked immediate alarm, painting a picture of a vehicle careening out of control with precious cargo aboard.
Police quickly located the bus, its journey abruptly halted in a snowbank. The scene was immediately unsettling, but the true gravity of the situation was yet to be revealed.
Inside, investigators discovered an open bottle of vodka – 750ml of Tito’s – alongside two empty miniature bottles. A recent receipt confirmed the purchase of the alcohol earlier that same day, raising chilling questions about the driver’s choices.
Kelly Weber, 46, the driver, would later be found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .331%, a staggering four times the legal limit. The test also detected the presence of Delta-9 Carboxy THC, adding another layer of concern.
As the investigation unfolded, a harrowing narrative emerged. Children, gripped by fear, had contacted their parents during the ride, desperately relaying the unsettling experience. One child was so frightened that they exited the bus at a stop and were collected by their parents.
Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele described the situation as incredibly dangerous, emphasizing the reckless decision to operate a school bus while heavily intoxicated. He expressed immense relief that a catastrophic crash had been averted.
Fifty-four young lives – including five children under the age of six – were placed in jeopardy. The thought of what could have happened weighs heavily, a stark reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving.
Following the incident, Weber voluntarily admitted herself to a rehabilitation facility. She now faces a warrant for her arrest, charged with driving under the influence, 54 counts of endangering the welfare of children, and 54 counts of reckless endangerment.
Arrangements are being made for Weber to turn herself in for arraignment, where bail will be determined. The community is left grappling with the shock and relief that this terrifying situation didn’t result in tragedy.
