A wave of users eager to embrace Windows 11 are hitting a frustrating snag. The official path to upgrade – Microsoft’s widely used Media Creation Tool – harbors a hidden flaw in its most recent version, halting installations in their tracks.
The Media Creation Tool is a remarkably simple solution. It allows users to download a small program, transfer it to a USB drive, and then use that drive to install a pristine copy of Windows. This method is invaluable for fresh installations, particularly when assisting friends and family with their tech challenges.
Microsoft acknowledged the bug on October 10th, just eleven days after the problematic update was released. The issue, detailed on their official “Known Issues” page, causes the tool to abruptly close on Windows 10 machines running the 22H2 release, leaving users with no explanation.
The timing couldn’t be worse. This update arrived right before Microsoft’s self-imposed deadline for Windows 11 upgrades. Ironically, 22H2 isn’t a relic of the past; it’s the latest full version of Windows 10, essential for receiving an additional year of crucial security updates.
While the extent of the problem remains unclear, Microsoft’s delayed response suggests it doesn’t impact every user. Fortunately, alternative upgrade methods exist. Utilizing a working Windows 11 machine to create the installation media, or manually downloading the ISO and building a bootable drive, offer viable workarounds.
The situation presents an unwelcome challenge, especially given existing concerns. However, with the issue now publicly documented, a swift resolution from Microsoft seems likely as they work to restore a smooth upgrade experience.
The bug has since been resolved, approximately a month after the initial release of the flawed tool. Microsoft has quietly implemented a fix, restoring functionality to the Media Creation Tool for those attempting the upgrade.
